Things I Love: Pickles

I love pickles. All pickles, but especially these pickles. In 2005, my sister was going to college in New York. She brought me back some pickles she bought at a little hole-in-the-wall place. Authentic New York barrel pickles. Half sours. Best pickles I have ever had. But I only had one jar (or plastic bucket as it were) and once they were gone I had no way to procure any more.  I’ve looked in every grocery store I’ve entered since but hadn’t even found anything called a Half Sour pickle. I even looked into having them shipped, but it as too expensive. I just couldn’t justify spending $40 to ship $6 worth of pickles. So for past 6 years I have had a insatiable craving.  But then two weeks ago, I stumbled upon a jar of Nathan’s New York Half Sour Pickles in my favorite neighborhood grocery store. By god, did they hit the spot. They might not be exactly the same, but after 6 years of searching and the low price tag of $3.69 a jar, they certainly fit the bill. I’m now on my 3rd jar. They are fantastic.
